Contaminated soil cannot fulfil its natural function as contaminant filter, water reservoir or intake area to the necessary extent. Accordingly, soil that is not self-supporting enough might cause damage to the traffic facilities overhead. Soil rehabilitation is aimed at reducing contaminated soil to the legally admitted measure of contamination-induced stress and to prepare or replace soil that is not appropriately stable, so they can meet the defined requirements for infrastructure facilities and enable avoidance of damage caused by sinkages, for instance.
