Accessible Bus Stops in Nuremberg

As part of the expansion of accessible public transport stops, PB CONSULT was commissioned by the City of Nuremberg (SÖR) to reconstruct 60 bus stops in the urban area of Nuremberg in an accessible manner.

For this purpose the bus stops were measured and transposed to CAD by means of reference points. The design planning was carried out in close cooperation with the client (SÖR), the Traffic Planning Office of the City of Nuremberg (VPL), the Verkehs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg (VAG) as well as relevant associations and representatives of people with disabilities.

Extensive swept path analyses were carried out to determine the required kerb heights, to enable a partial lifting of the kerb at stops where buses swing over the kerb. The planning of tactile paths as well as the design of surfaces (ramps, transverse and longitudinal inclinations) with consideration of de-watering requirements were also part of PB CONSULT’s responsibilities.

Following approval by the grantor (Government of Middle Franconia), implementation planning, the procurement documents and the traffic signage plans were handed over to SÖR for award and execution. All bus platforms are to be rebuilt for equal access by the year 2020.
