Expansion of the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway
Besides the construction of the northern and southern bypasses near the city of Mombasa in Kenya, the rehabilitation and expansion of 41.7 km road between Mombasa and Mariakani is planned, which forms part of the Northern Road Corridor. This corridor connects the landlocked countries Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi directly to the port of Mombasa. Furthermore, a key connection to the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and parts of northern Tanzania will be formed.
The traffic volumes required for the upgrading of the A109 in lot 2 “Kwa Jomvu – Mariakani” and their impact on the road infrastructure were discussed in this project. The subject of the investigation is the traffic volumes to be determined on the A109 as well as the turning movements at the intersections A109 / C111 (Mazeras) and A109 / C107 (Mariakani) in the study area, which are relevant for measuring. For this purpose, traffic surveys and subsequent estimations were carried out. These serve as the basis for the measuring of the roadway structure and the design of the two intersections. The intersections are examined for their capacities and, in the case of overloading, adaptation suggestions of the intersection structure are presented. In addition, the influence of the northern and southern bypasses on the predicted traffic volumes in the study area is examined, which is calculated by the traffic model.
